Mount Pelion                        
Modern Greek Oros Pilion,   mountain on the Magnesia peninsula of southeastern Thessaly, Mount Pelion is located in the central of Greece and embraces 24 villages built with traditional Pelian architecture. It is just northeast of Volos, has a wooded western flank overlooking the Pagasitikos gulf and its ancient ports. Today it offers the best in both winter and summer holiday activities with a ski resort in Hania and numerous beach resorts on the east coast.
It is well known since ancient time for the legendary Centaurs (half men half horses) and through the recent history been the refuge of Greeks who found shelter from invaders.   The area around is surrounded by numerous traditional ancient villages which are very popular for their products of the land (citrus, olives, grapes).
Thessaly offers opportunities for mountain exploration (the Olympus, Pindus, Ossa and the Pelion are locations) and beach activities of the Aegean. The Mount Pelion peninsula is known for its forests, tastes tasteful resorts, and unspoiled coastline. Volos is the main port city is an easy access point of Sporades. Food & Local products: Mount Pelion is characterised by its glorious trees but especially for its long life olive groves. It is the location where the exceptional virgin olive oil is produced which comes straight from the olive tree. It is an immense natural beauty and maintains a wonderful selection of biological and traditional Greek products. Many succulent local products can be found in the area; fresh dairy products, colourful flowers, incredible quantities of curative herbs, traditional hand-made Pelion sweets, fine pure olive oil, strong vinegar with local herbs, golden thick honey as well as sweet local wines and fruit liquors.

The typical specialities of Pelion, that everyone should taste is wild dear, pick and roar, spicy mixes of sausages and meat called "spetsofai",  cabbage leaves stuffed with minced meat "lahanodolmades", excellent pies with meat or vegetables, cheese bread called "tyropsomo", white been soup and lots of other traditional Greek food. Fresh fish is also a speciality as it is in all other Greek islands.

The women's Agriculture-Tourism Cooperative prepares a wide diversity of fresh sweets made from local fruits and other sorts of food. All food is produced without any chemicals or preservatives and is certified as being biological produced.

Sightseeing
The little Train: It was for about 25 years abandoned that the historic little train of the Mount Pelion was abandoned. It is now back up and running thanks to the extreme efforts of its friends to persuade the local authorities to reinstate it. Now it operates during the high season the summer and during weekends for tourists and visitors of all ages and nationalities. It used to be motor vehicle operating between Volos and Lehonia in 1895 and between Lehonia and Milies in 1903, covering a total distance of approximately 29 km. Facilities

Museums: The area proposes a variety of interesting museums such as the Museum of music and art folklore, the archaeological museum Athanassakio, Milie's library, the Aggelimis museum and the Anetopoulos ceramic museum.

Churches: Pelion is famous for its many picturesque churches with unique basilicas with outer narthexes and stone benches. Pelian churches are real monuments of art which contain fine historic wood carved iconostases, superb hagiographs and expose Byzantine icons of great religious and historical value. Most churches have a rectangular shape built with traditional local stone, and the interior is rich.  Some of the Byzantine and orthodox churches are 'the Basilica of Agios Ioannis', 'Pamegistoi Taxiarches', 'Baselica of Agia Marina', 'Theotokos Oxias', 'Agios Gersimos', Zagora churches.
Sports: Swimming and Water Sports; Around the area of Mount Pelion one can enjoy a lot of famous beautiful beaches. With its sapphire deep blue sea visitors can experience wonderful swimming and other numerous water sports that can take part in Villa Kalypso's  private beach (with its own facilities of beach and water sports) such as diving, jet skiing, snorkelling, sailing, water skiing, canoeing etc.

Walking; Join walks that can be arranged to have a unique experience of the centuries old cobbled mule-tracks or footpaths through apple orchards and chestnut forests & valleys, old mills, tumbling rivers forming cascading waterfalls. Admire the traditional architecture to see old churches, to hear the history and legends of Mount Pelion amble on slopes in cool, shade woods, wild gardens passing by fresh water springs. Skiing; Pelion is the place in Greece where few if any are the winters without snow. At the top of the north Pelion the snow stays for months. The famous snow ski resort is the village called Hania with its skiing centre 'Agriolefkes' with three long pistes for beginners and experiences skiers, a refuge, ski lifts, parking lots and all other amenities. Sports other than skiing is snowboard and mountain artillery ski.  While speeding down the ski-runs, the skiers and snow boarders can enjoy breathtaking view of both the Aegean Sea and the Pagasitikos Gulf. On a sunny day the experience is amazing!!
Horse riding; Pelion is the ideal place for some horse trekking with its impressive routes and picturesque paths in peaceful glens with enormous boulders carpeted in green moss. Horseback tours are magnificent!
Fishing; There are so many beautiful areas for someone to sit and relax while he enjoys one days fishing alone or with a group of friends. Don't hesitate to provide your own supper with a fresh catch of fish. Octopus and other fish is available in many locations.
Cruises; Mount Pelion is surrounded by Sporades Islands,the Pagasitikos gulf and Aegean Sea. Visitors can enjoy a one day cruise or a multi day cruise around the area of Pelion of the famous islands of Sporades. There are daily cruises linking the port of Volos with any of the Sporades ports that facilitate the desire for those who want to explore the beauty of any island in their preference in no time and no hustle.
Camping; Pelion is a perfect place for camping as it is surrounded by the beautiful nature, greenery and peaceful mountains and quiet beaches. There are few camping facilities and is not allowed on the beaches.
