Rent a lighthouse in Croatia on the wilder shores of Croatia.
ISLAND OF PALAGRUZA
Palagruza lighthouse was built in 1875 on the island by the same name, located in the middle of the Adriatic Sea, between the Italian and Croatian coasts, 68 nautical miles south of Split. This history-laden island of exceptional beauty is Croatia's remotest island. The island itself is 1400 metres long, 300 metres wide and is 90 metres at its highest point. It is covered in Mediterranean vegetation. There are two four-bed apartments in the spacious lighthouse building.
Getting there: Transfer to the lighthouse in a 15-metre speedboat which leaves each day at 8 am from the marina on the island of Korcula and takes approximately two hours.
SV. IVAN NA PUCINI
Sv. Ivan lighthouse, built in 1853, is located on the most distant islet of the small archipelago facing the mainland resort of Rovinj. This islet is actually a 70 x 50-metre rock with a relatively easily-accessible shore and shallow waters, which makes Sv. Ivan an ideal destination for families with children who would like to spend a Robinson Crusoe type of holiday.
The 23-metre-high lighthouse tower offers fabulous views, while there are two four-bed apartments in the lighthouse building. The islet has a berth where smaller boats can be pulled out of the sea with the help of a hoist. Due to splendid underwater sites and numerous species of fish, this destination is very popular for those looking to get away from the everyday routine, as well as for those who like to go fishing and diving.
Getting there : We recommend transfers from Rovinj port early in the morning when sea conditions should be calm (departure time before 9 am). The trip to the lighthouse on Captain Bogdan Mokoric's boat takes 30 to 45 minutes, depending on weather conditions. Disembarking on the islet in the afternoon is difficult due to strong western winds.
PRISNJAK
The islet of Prisnjak is just 300 metres from the western coast of the island of Murter The surrounding waters are rich in fish, while the lighthouse building is only 15 metres away from the beach and the landing place. There is one large apartment and a spacious stone terrace in the lighthouse.
A large pine tree in front of the building offers plenty of shade on hot summer days. Next to the tree is a barbecue grill where freshly-caught fish can be prepared. The lighthouse is automated and has no lighthouse keeper.
Getting there : Transfer to Prisnjak, unlike to other lighthouses, can be organised at any time of day. It takes some 25 minutes and you will pass by several picturesque islets.
PORER
Porer lighthouse was built in 1833 on the islet of the same name, southwest of Istria's southernmost cape. The islet is an 80-metre cliff, 2.5 km from the mainland and
Premantura. The stone structure is a ground-floor building and contains two fourbed apartments.
The islet is so small that it takes just over a minute to walk around it, nevertheless, the walk is magnificent due to sunsets on Porer that are considered the most beautiful in the Adriatic.
Getting there : Return transfer is organised from Premantura by Captain Ivan Giotta. Transfer to Porer takes place in the morning and takes 25 to 35 minutes, depending on weather conditions.
Staying on a lighthouse on the Croatian islands is not only interesting in summer, but also in spring and autumn when the sea temperatures are perfect for sport fishing. Summer is the time to enjoy the warm waters and starry nights, while autumn is famous for fabulous sunsets.
